What does the future look like for your business? Here's one idea.

Seth Godin gave a talk recently on the new dynamics of book publishing and it’s relevant to you – even if you’re not in book publishing. Why? Well, if you care about: “…how industries are making (or not) the shift to the new rules of a digital age,” Seth is talking to you. The talk is pure gold, no matter what industry you’re in. The rules have changed for many industries. While publishing is certainly one, the record industry, travel, banking, and many others are seeing these same types of shifts.

I particularly recommend Seth’s comparison of Columbia Records to Scott Adams’ Dilbert (right about the 14:35 mark). The record companies have lost sight of what business they’re actually in. As I’ve said before, (about the RIAA, of all things), when your business model depends upon suing your customers… well, game over, dude. Meanwhile, Scott Adams continues to gain new customers and – more important – gain additional business from his existing ones. And he hasn’t even had to sue anyone. Shocking, I know.

Many valuable tools exist for learning strategy and marketing on the web. Go ahead and add Seth’s talk to that list. The whole thing last about 25 minutes, followed by 25 minutes of questions, so even if you only get through the first part, you’ll gain a lot for just a little time. It is, to use a favorite Seth Godin term, remarkable.

You can download Seth’s talk here. And I’d highly recommend you do.
